Electrification in our factories
A major step towards more sustainable production at Aviko in Lomm
Healthy Earth
In 2025, an important step towards more sustainable production was taken at our Dutch production site in Lomm. We started the construction and installation of a fully electric e-boiler. This e-boiler replaces part of the steam generation currently based on fossil fuels and runs entirely on green electricity. As a result, we achieve an annual CO₂ reduction of at least 4,800 tonnes.
Collaboration as the key to success
This project demonstrates how our sustainability ambitions are translated into concrete action. The transition to an e-boiler requires more than just new technology. It also necessitated an expansion of the electrical infrastructure and close coordination with external parties.
Thanks to the close collaboration with the municipality of Venlo, the Province of Limburg and grid operator Enexis, permits were granted in 2025 and construction could begin. This cooperation was crucial in securing additional electrical capacity on an increasingly congested electricity grid.
Marlies Meijer-Willems, Environmental & Sustainability Advisor at Aviko:
“This project is a great example of how we are working together with our partners to build an energy-efficient and climate-friendly production environment. By combining knowledge, expertise and capacity with governments and grid operators, we can take steps that would otherwise not be possible.”
Status: behind the scenes
To provide the e-boiler with sufficient capacity, the construction of new infrastructure started at the end of 2025. This includes a high-voltage cable from the California substation in the municipality of Horst aan de Maas and the construction of a new distribution station on the factory site in Lomm.
These activities are substantial, but essential to enable the transition to electrification. Project leader Niek Besselink, Lead Engineer at Aviko in Lomm, explains:
“The construction of the infrastructure and the new high-voltage cable is well underway. At the same time, we are further developing the engineering of the e-boiler and the other installations, while carrying out the necessary structural modifications.”
The project is progressing according to plan. The completion of the e-boiler installation is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026. After extensive testing, the e-boiler will be commissioned by the end of 2026.
Part of a broader sustainability strategy
The investment in electrification fits within our broader sustainability strategy, in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The e-boiler in Lomm is not a stand-alone project. Across Aviko, we are working at multiple locations to further decarbonise our energy supply.
